On September 28, eight people lost their lives in two consecutive Russian drone attacks on a medical center in Sumy, a city in northeast Ukraine. The attacks were reported by Ukrainian officials.

Details of the Attacks

According to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, the first attack occurred on Saturday morning, claiming one life. While patients and personnel were being evacuated, a second attack took place, resulting in more casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on his Telegram channel that eleven people were injured when Russia used Shahed drones to attack the hospital.

Location and Timing

Sumy is located near the border with Russia’s Kursk area. The first attack happened at around 7:35 a.m. (04:35 GMT), targeting a hospital with 86 patients and 38 staff members. The second attack occurred at about 8:25 a.m. (05:25 GMT) while rescuers and police were evacuating patients.

Defense and Counterattacks

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down two of the four missiles and 69 of the 73 Russian drones launched overnight. Kyiv city authorities reported that about fifteen drones were shot down above the Ukrainian capital and its surroundings.

The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that air defenses shot down four Ukrainian drones over Belgorod and one over Kursk, both regions bordering Ukraine.

Zelenskyy’s US Visit

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the US to seek support for Ukraine. He met with US President Joe Biden and Democratic Party presidential candidate Kamala Harris to discuss his “victory plan.”
