Egypt Condemns Israel’s Withdrawal from UNRWA Agreement
Cairo, Egypt – On November 5, Egypt expressed strong disapproval of Israel’s decision to withdraw from the agreement regulating the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The Egyptian Foreign Ministry described this move as a violation of international law and a threat to the Palestinian cause, including the right of return for refugees.
Israel’s withdrawal was announced by Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, who tweeted a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. This decision follows the Knesset’s legislation barring Israeli officials from cooperating with UNRWA. Danon stated that Israel will continue to work with humanitarian organizations but not with those it accuses of promoting terrorism.
UNRWA has faced criticism from Israeli officials, who have called for the agency to be defunded and stripped of its authority in Gaza, citing alleged involvement of its staff in attacks by Hamas.
