Edappadi K Palaniswami Walks Out Over Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy in Tamil Nadu Assembly
On Saturday, AIADMK party general secretary and Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, walked out of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He alleged that Speaker M Appavu refused to give him time to discuss the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy.
Palaniswami claimed that 55 people died and 183 were affected by the tragedy. He criticized the government for being slow to respond and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister MK Stalin.
The opposition leaders walked out after their request to adjourn the Question Hour was denied. On Friday, AIADMK MLAs were evicted after a sit-in protest.
Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth reported that 193 people consumed illicit liquor, with 53 deaths and 140 currently safe. Seven arrests have been made, and the case is being handled by the CBI CID branch of Tamil Nadu Police.
The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial inquiry led by retired Madras High Court judge Justice B Gokuldas, who will submit a report within three months. Chief Minister MK Stalin announced financial aid for the victims’ families and those under treatment.
