Ecole Polytechnique Expands Collaboration with Indian Institutions
Laura Chaubard, the Director General of France’s Ecole Polytechnique, is visiting India to enhance academic partnerships through student exchange programs. Agreements have been signed with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi to facilitate this exchange. Chaubard expressed excitement about welcoming Indian students to their programs and allowing French students to study in India.
Currently, 80 Indian students are at Ecole Polytechnique, and there are plans to double this number. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in July 2023, a goal was set to increase Indian students in France to 30,000 by 2030. Presently, about 10,000 Indian students are in France.
Chaubard highlighted shared values in research-oriented education and industry connections between Ecole Polytechnique and Indian institutions. Discussions with IISc Bangalore are ongoing for future collaborations, including joint PhD supervisions and double degrees. A faculty seminar is planned to strengthen faculty connections.
Funding opportunities for Indian students are available through Ecole Polytechnique and national initiatives in France. Chaubard emphasized the potential of Indian students and the support mechanisms based on excellence.
Chaubard aims to strengthen ties between India and France, aligning with President Macron’s educational partnership roadmap. She sees potential in expanding collaborations, particularly in Bangalore’s innovation ecosystem. Her visit aims to build on Indian alumni success stories and expand student exchanges and research initiatives.
France has introduced English medium courses and relaxed visa regimes to attract more Indian students. An agreement on mutual degree recognition was signed in 2018 to facilitate higher education pursuits and employability for students from both countries.
