Eastern Naval Command and Indian Coast Guard Celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day
Visakhapatnam and Chennai Join Hands for a Cleaner Coastline
The 39th International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day was celebrated by the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam on Saturday. This event was part of the larger Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 initiative. Naval units in Visakhapatnam conducted cleanup drives at Yarada, Naval harbour/channel, and Kalinga beaches.
Approximately 1,000 Naval personnel, including their families, participated in the event. Outstation units across the Eastern Naval Command also engaged in cleanup activities, involving the local community. These efforts aimed to promote beach cleanliness, environmental awareness, and respect for coastal areas, which in turn supports marine biodiversity.
Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard organized a ‘Beach Clean Drive’ at Marina Beach in Chennai. The event saw participation from Chennai Corporation staff, NGOs, students, and the general public. IG Donny Michael, Commander of Coast Guard Region (East), highlighted that over 200 beaches across India were being cleaned as part of this initiative, including locations in Vizag, Kakinada, and Puducherry.
The Ministry of Environment states that International Coastal Cleanup Day is observed annually on the third Saturday of September. The day aims to inspire people to clean up beaches, raise awareness about the importance of preserving oceans and waterways, and address marine pollution.
