Early Snowfall in Thangu and Gurudongmar Lake, Sikkim Faces Heavy Rainfall and Landslides

Heavy rainfall over the past three days in Sikkim has led to the season’s first snowfall in Thangu (3900 meters) and Gurudongmar Lake (5425 meters) in North Sikkim. This snowfall occurred much earlier than the usual winter season.

Due to the sudden change in weather, the high reaches of Lachen and Lachung Valley also experienced their first snowfall of the season. This unexpected snowfall disrupted daily life and posed challenges for road users.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has mobilized heavy machinery and manpower to clear strategic roads in North Sikkim. Over the past 96 hours, the state received 254.6 mm of rainfall, leading to landslides and a rise in the water level of the Teesta River. This caused disruptions on National Highway 10 at multiple locations.

The weather cleared on Sunday, with no rainfall in Gangtok and other low-lying areas. However, isolated rainfall is predicted across the state for the next five days. The temperature in Gangtok and Tadong rose to 22 degrees and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.
