EAM S Jaishankar Discusses New Development Paradigm at ORF Event in New York

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is on a visit to the US, participated in a discussion organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in New York. The event, titled ‘Tiger’s Tale: Crafting a New Development Paradigm,’ took place on Thursday.

During the discussion, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of democratizing the economy, enhancing mobility, imparting skills, and building connectivity to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He was joined by foreign ministers from various countries, including Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Baiba Braze and Guyana’s Foreign Minister High Hilton Todd.

Jaishankar also met with Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, and Borge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum. He shared his thoughts on X, stating, ‘As the Pact of the Future comes into force and the global economy continues to face challenges, democratizing the economy, enhancing mobility, imparting skills, and building connectivity are going to be key movers for achieving the SDGs.’

The SDGs, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, aim to end poverty, reduce inequality, and build more peaceful, prosperous societies by 2030. On September 22, world leaders unanimously adopted the ‘Pact for the Future’ at the UN Headquarters in New York. This pact includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations, marking a significant step in adapting international cooperation to address contemporary challenges.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the need to move beyond outdated systems, stating, ‘We cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents.’ General Assembly President Dennis Francis echoed this sentiment, affirming that the Pact would ‘lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order for all peoples and nations.’

Overall, the agreement of the Pact is a strong statement of countries’ commitment to the United Nations, the international system, and international law.
