EAM S Jaishankar Congratulates Philemon Yang on Leading 79th UN General Assembly
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated Philemon Yang on assuming the Presidency of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the General Assembly’s leadership in supporting the priorities of the Global South.
Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, was elected president of the 79th General Assembly in June. He aims to resolve conflicts in Gaza, Haiti, and Ukraine, and to keep human rights at the core of the General Assembly’s efforts.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also congratulated Yang, noting that the 79th session begins amid global challenges but with opportunities for positive change. Guterres emphasized the need for global cooperation to tackle issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change.
The General Debate, scheduled from September 24 to September 30, will focus on the theme: ‘Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.’ High-level meetings will address topics such as nuclear disarmament, rising sea levels, and strengthening global health systems.
