EAM Jaishankar Meets Japan PM Kishida at Quad Meeting in Tokyo
On Monday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida along with other Quad Foreign Ministers during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tokyo. Jaishankar conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warm regards.
In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Honored to call on Prime Minister Kishida along with fellow Quad Foreign Ministers today in Tokyo. Conveyed the warm regards of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Briefed him on the key takeaways from our meeting today. Appreciate his guidance for the continued growth of Quad grouping and value his views on further intensification of India-Japan relations.”
Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with the expansive agenda the Quad has developed over the years. He highlighted various areas of cooperation, including trusted telecom technology, undersea cable connectivity, humanitarian and disaster relief, critical and emerging technologies, cyber and health security, climate action, infrastructure, capacity building and training, STEM education, maritime domain awareness, and counter-terrorism.
He emphasized that the Quad is not just a ‘talk shop’ but a platform that generates practical outcomes. He mentioned several initiatives, such as the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness initiative, the deployment of the Open-RAN network in Palau, a space-based climate warning system in Mauritius, and off-grid solar projects in Indo-Pacific islands. During the Covid pandemic, the Quad nations cooperated to deliver vaccines to countries in the region. The first cohort of Quad STEM fellowships is passing out, and the second one will also cover the ASEAN.
Jaishankar concluded by stating that the Quad nations, being democratic polities, pluralistic societies, and market economies, are working together for a free and open Indo-Pacific, a rules-based order, and global good, which serves as a powerful stabilizing factor in an uncertain and volatile world.
