Dutee Chand Supports Algerian Boxer Imane Khalif Amid Gender Controversy at Paris Olympics
In Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, Indian athlete Dutee Chand, the country’s first openly gay sprinter, spoke about the gender controversy faced by Algerian boxer Imane Khalif at the Paris Olympics. Italian boxer Angela Carini quit her match against Khalif, who had previously been banned from world championships due to testosterone and gender eligibility issues. Khalif won the fight in just 46 seconds.
Dutee Chand shared her own experience of being dropped from the 2014 Commonwealth Games due to hyperandrogenism, a condition where women have high levels of androgens. She expressed support for Khalif, questioning why her opponent had an issue if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not.
Angela Carini, in tears after the match, cited severe nose pain as the reason for quitting and stated she was not there to judge Khalif’s eligibility. Khalif had been disqualified from the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women’s Championships last year due to elevated testosterone levels but was allowed to compete in the Paris Olympics by the IOC.
The IOC defended Khalif and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting, stating that all athletes complied with eligibility and medical regulations. The IOC criticized the IBA’s arbitrary decision to disqualify the athletes without due process and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting athletes’ human rights.
