Dubai Launches World’s First 3D-Printed Electric Abra

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started the trial operation of the world’s first electric abra made using 3D printing technology. This abra can carry 20 passengers and retains the traditional abra design. The initiative aims to reduce manufacturing time by 90%, costs by 30%, and operation and maintenance expenses by 30%, supporting Dubai’s 3D printing strategy and environmental sustainability goals.

Technical Features

The abra, measuring 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width, features the longest monocoque structure created using 3D printing technology. It is powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries. The abra will be tested at the Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station on the TR6 line, with its performance compared to current fibreglass abras.

Collaborations and Manufacturing

The abra was manufactured by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi, with materials from Mitsubishi of Japan, programming and calibration by Siemens of Germany, and electric motors from Torqeedo of Germany. TASNEEF Company ensured compliance with safety standards.

Upgrading Traditional Abra Stations

RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek to improve marine transport services and safety standards. The project includes enhancing four traditional abra stations, with improvements already completed at Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station and Deira Old Souq Station. Upgrades at Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station will be completed by August 2025.

Improvements include new floating docks, retail spaces, facilities for employees, bike racks, and increased passenger waiting areas with priority seating for People of Determination. The project aims to use sustainable materials, reducing annual maintenance costs by 10%.

Future of Marine Transport

The marine transport sector in Dubai has grown significantly since the completion of the Dubai Water Canal, connecting Dubai Creek to the coastal area. The sector will continue to expand with new urban and tourist facilities, making marine transport a preferred choice for navigating Dubai’s scenic waterways.
