Dubai Invites Public to Name Streets and Roads

Dubai’s Road Naming Committee has introduced a new platform called Street Designation Proposal, supervised by Dubai Municipality. This platform allows the public to suggest names for roads and streets across Dubai. The initiative aims to preserve the legacy of the past, promote civilization, and align with the Emirate’s future development.

Objectives and Goals

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, stated that the platform is part of efforts to promote community participation. The goal is to revive heritage names and highlight national identity, social, and cultural characteristics that reflect Dubai’s history and values.

How It Works

The platform serves as a digital system where the public can suggest names based on specific criteria. These criteria include:

  • Arabic and Islamic design and architecture
  • Art, culture, and Arabic poetic prosody
  • Natural phenomena, local plants, trees, flowers, and marine and wild plants
  • Environmental sustainability, ships, marine tools, fishing, winds, and rain
  • Squares, forts, ancient castles, archaeological sites, local and ancient jewelry
  • Horse and Arabian camel names and descriptions
  • Types of palms and date palms, farming and agriculture professions
  • Industrial and artisanal professions and their tools
  • Gemstones, inventions, and modern technology

The public can contribute by proposing names through the platform link: https://roadsnaming.ae.

Recent Developments

The committee has completed naming roads in the Al-Khawaneej 2 area during its trial phase. Names inspired by local trees, plants, and flowers, such as Ghaf Street, Sidr, Reehan, Faghi, Samer, and Shareesh, have been used.

The Dubai Road Naming Committee was established by Executive Council Resolution No. 35 of 2021 and is led by the Director-General of Dubai Municipality. It includes representatives from the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, and experienced Dubai citizens.
