DSP Sukhbir Singh Votes in Jammu and Kashmir Elections Despite Injuries
Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir), India, October 1: Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sukhbir Singh, who was injured in a recent encounter with terrorists, cast his vote during the third and final phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. DSP Singh sustained bullet injuries during an encounter in Kathua district but still voted at the Tehsildar Office in Udhampur. His wife also cast her vote.
The third phase of polling saw a voter turnout of 65.48% till 5 pm, with Udhampur recording the highest at 72.91%, followed by Sambha at 72.41%, Kathua at 70.53%, Jammu at 66.79%, Bandipora at 63.33%, and Baramulla at 55.73%. This is the first election in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
Among the 40 constituencies, 24 are in the Jammu division and the rest in the Kashmir Valley. A total of 415 candidates, including former deputy Chief Ministers Tara Chand and Muzaffar Hussain Beig, are contesting in this phase. High-profile leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and former J-K chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti campaigned extensively.
The first phase of voting on September 18 saw a poll percentage of 61.13%, while the second phase on September 25 recorded 56.31%. The West Pakistani refugee community voted for the first time in these assembly elections after gaining citizenship post the abrogation of Article 370. The National Conference and Congress formed an alliance, while the PDP and BJP are other major contenders. The counting of votes will take place on October 8.
