DRDO and IIT Delhi Create New Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets Named ABHED
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi have developed new Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets called ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat). These jackets were created at the DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Delhi.
The jackets are made from polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic material. The design is based on the characterization of various materials at high strain rates, followed by appropriate modeling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO. The armour plates for the jackets have passed all necessary R&D trials and meet the highest threat levels while being lighter than the maximum weight limits set by the Indian Army. The jackets weigh between 8.2 kgs and 9.5 kgs for different BIS Levels and provide 360-degree protection with their modular design.
Some Indian industries have been shortlisted for the Transfer of Technology and handholding. The Centre is ready to transfer the technology to three industries. Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, congratulated DIA-CoE on this achievement, highlighting the effective ecosystem of successful defence R&D by DRDO, academia, and industry.
The DIA-CoE was formed by modifying the Joint Advanced Technology Center of DRDO at IIT Delhi in 2022 to involve industry and academia in defence R&D. It has been actively pursuing various projects on advanced technologies, involving DRDO scientists, academic researchers, and industry partners.
