Dr Vishal Kumar Assures Support for Students Fleeing Bangladesh Protests to Tripura

Dr Vishal Kumar, the District Magistrate of West Tripura, spoke about the recent influx of students and residents from Bangladesh into Tripura. This movement is due to ongoing anti-reservation protests in Bangladesh, which have affected many people, especially students pursuing MBBS and other occupations.

Dr Kumar mentioned that there are two main checkpoints, Akhaura and Srimantpur, where people are entering Tripura. So far, 46 students have arrived through Akhaura and 80 people through Srimantpur, with more expected to come.

Authorities are in contact with the External Affairs Ministry and the Assistant High Commissioner in Bangladesh to provide necessary support. This includes transportation by train or airplane, and bus facilities for nearby states like Manipur and Assam.

The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands to reform the quota system for civil service jobs, which reserves positions for specific groups, including descendants of those who participated in the 1971 War of Independence against Pakistan. The protests have led to violent reactions, including attacks on state television headquarters and police booths, and a nationwide shutdown of schools, universities, and mobile services.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has issued an advisory for Indian citizens to avoid non-essential travel and minimize movement due to the unrest. The Ministry of External Affairs has assured that all Indian nationals in Bangladesh are safe and that they are closely monitoring the situation.
