Dr. Vikas Divyakirti Explains Delhi Coaching Incident
Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, founder and MD of Drishti IAS, spoke about the tragic incident at a Delhi coaching center where three students lost their lives due to flooding. He explained how water breached the basement gates, trapping the students inside.
How the Incident Happened
Dr. Divyakirti described how the road was filled with water, and the basement level was not much higher than the road. A jeep passing by caused water to splash and break a panel, allowing water to flood the basement. The biometric system on the gates and a busted exhaust fan made it difficult for students to escape.
Student Testimonies
According to student testimonies, water rose rapidly, taking only 50 seconds to go from torso level to head level, leaving little time for anyone to react and escape.
Responsibility and Future Actions
Dr. Divyakirti acknowledged the responsibility of coaching institutes and emphasized the importance of adhering to building laws. He stated that they would follow all regulations, even if it means relocating from Delhi.
Statement from Delhi LG VK Saxena
Delhi LG VK Saxena mentioned that illegal construction and encroachment had covered sewer lines in the area, contributing to the flooding. Dr. Divyakirti also noted that new rules prevent basements from being built higher than 8 cm, which could have helped avert the incident.
Dr. Divyakirti expressed his commitment to ensuring safety and compliance with regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
