Dr RG’s Sinus Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Saves His Vision

Dr RG, a 27-year-old physician, had been experiencing nasal obstruction on his right side for three months. When he suddenly lost vision in his right eye, he sought urgent medical help. A CT scan showed he had nasal polyposis and fungal sinusitis, which was pressing on his optic nerve.

Dr RG was given IV antibiotics and steroids to reduce the pressure on his nerve. He then underwent emergency sinus surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. During the surgery, doctors found the fungus spreading in all sinuses and between the nerve and brain layer. The fungus was completely removed, and the optic nerve was decompressed.

Dr Varun Rai, an ENT Consultant at the hospital, explained that these surgeries are very delicate because the optic nerve is fragile. Special instruments were used to avoid damaging the nerve while removing the fungus. The nerve was decompressed 270 degrees, keeping its blood supply intact.

After the surgery, Dr RG’s vision improved and returned to normal within two days. He was discharged in a stable condition with fully restored vision.

Dr Varun Rai and Dr Manish Munjal, another ENT Senior Consultant at the hospital, highlighted the rarity and severity of such cases. They emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious complications. They also noted that increased awareness and better diagnostic facilities have made such cases rare, although rising pollution levels are causing more nasal allergies.
