India’s Innovation Ecosystem Grows with Government Reforms

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced that the Indian government is fostering an “enabling innovation ecosystem” through recent reforms. Speaking at the US-India Science and Technology Endowment Fund (USISTEF) award function in New Delhi, he highlighted initiatives like design-linked incentives for semiconductors and PLI schemes for automobiles.

Startup Boom in India

Dr. Singh noted the rapid growth of India’s startup ecosystem, which has expanded from 350 startups in 2014 to over 140,000 today. India is now home to more than 110 unicorns, with 23 emerging last year alone, showcasing the country’s progress in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).

Indo-US Collaboration

During the event, Dr. Singh presented awards to 17 winning teams as part of the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET). He emphasized new agreements between science agencies to enhance international collaboration in areas like AI, advanced manufacturing, and quantum computing.

USISTEF’s Impact

Established in 2009, USISTEF supports joint US-India entrepreneurial initiatives. The program has significantly impacted the development of new products and technologies, fostering sustainable collaborations between US and Indian inventors.

The Department of Science and Technology and the USA are working to strengthen the Indo-US strategic technology partnership, connecting scientists to collaborate on emerging technologies.
