Dr Arjun Dasgupta Demands Justice for Trainee Doctor’s Death at RG Kar Hospital
Dr Arjun Dasgupta, former President of the West Bengal Doctors Forum and a senior ENT surgeon, has raised concerns about a possible cover-up in the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. He has called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Speaking on Monday, Dr Dasgupta emphasized the need for justice, stating, “There is a sense of great injustice being done. Our primary demands include a thorough investigation by a sitting judge, which we have achieved through the Kolkata High Court’s intervention. The High Court has handed the case over to the CBI, which is their prerogative. However, the Supreme Court has also taken a keen interest, with a three-judge bench now overseeing the matter. Our demands are still there.”
Three Major Concerns
Dr Dasgupta highlighted three major concerns:
- Identifying and arresting all individuals involved in the crime.
- Investigating the conditions at RG Kar Hospital that allowed such an incident to occur.
- Examining the suspected cover-up attempts thoroughly.
He expressed frustration over the lack of updates from the CBI or state police, noting that it has been 21 days without any progress reports. “In all high-profile cases, the police or the CBI holds press conferences and gives their progress report. So we haven’t got anything for the last 22 days. That’s a big anguish,” he said.
Allegations of Corruption
Dr Dasgupta also alleged corruption and malpractice within the Bengal health system, particularly at RG Kar Hospital. He claimed that there were issues of money being exchanged for grades, postings, and transfers, with Sandeep Ghosh being a central figure in these activities. He urged the Supreme Court and CBI to uncover the truth behind these allegations.
The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital on August 9, sparking nationwide protests and demands for justice and better security for healthcare professionals. The Central Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case from the Kolkata police following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
