Dr Arjun Dang Discusses AI’s Role in Healthcare at 3rd Digital Health Summit

New Delhi [India], July 20: Dr Arjun Dang, CEO of Dr Dang’s Lab, shared insights on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare during the 3rd CII Digital Health Summit. The event, themed ‘Leveraging AI for Improving Health Outcomes,’ was organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on Friday.

AI as an Assistant to Doctors

Dr Dang emphasized that AI will never replace doctors but will assist them in identifying crucial abnormalities quickly, enabling better diagnoses and treatments. He stated, “AI is assisting the doctor, AI will never be able to replace the doctor, but it will be an assistant to the doctor that is going to help identify crucial abnormalities in the essence of time. So that we can empower the physicians to give a better diagnosis and hence a better treatment as well.”

Challenges in Using AI

Dr Dang also discussed the challenges of using AI technology, including the importance of patient consent and cybersecurity. He said, “AI involves a lot of data sets, which are again gotten from patients. So the consent of the patient is very important whenever you use any kind of data that is used to leverage any AI module. Also, apart from this, the issue of cyber security is very critical when it comes to doing anything digital because, at the end of the day, we have patient data that is crucial to keep safe.”

Benefits of AI in Pathology

Highlighting the benefits of AI in pathology, Dr Dang mentioned that AI can reduce patient costs and improve care. He referred to a McKinsey study that found AI could reduce overall costs by about half and increase impact by 30%. He said, “AI is now starting to play a crucial role, not only in radiology, where there is a lot of stuff happening, but more to my expertise, that is in the field of pathology. We have machines and completely automated equipment that flag abnormalities in a particular sample before it reaches the doctor for any kind of interpretation.”
