Donald Trump Chooses JD Vance as Vice President for 2024 Election
Washington DC [US], July 16: Former US President Donald Trump has selected JD Vance as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2024 elections. Vance, a 39-year-old first-time lawmaker from Ohio, is known for his ‘America First’ stance and has supported Trump’s positions on various issues, including the US support to Ukraine and Israel’s war against Hamas.
Vance, who once called Trump ‘America’s Hitler,’ has undergone a significant political transformation over the past eight years. He has shifted from being a ‘Never Trump’ conservative to a ‘hard-edged MAGA loyalist’ and a staunch defender of Trump.
Earlier this month, Vance made controversial comments about nuclear proliferation, suggesting that the UK could become the first Islamist country to acquire a nuclear weapon after the Labour Party’s recent victory in the general elections. He advised his ‘Tory friends’ to address the defeat of the Conservative Party in the UK.
At the Milwaukee Republican convention, where Trump was officially nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate for the November 2024 election, former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss praised Trump for his ‘strength and fortitude’ after an assassination attempt. She also criticized President Joe Biden as a ‘weak president.’
Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate and a classmate of Vance at Yale, endorsed Vance’s selection. Ramaswamy expressed his pride and support for Vance, calling the Trump-Vance ticket ‘the most formidable presidential ticket of my lifetime.’
Trump announced Vance’s candidacy on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that after careful consideration, he believes Vance is the best choice for Vice President. The announcement came just two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Vance, who grew up in a steel mill community in Ohio, served in the Marine Corps and later studied political science and philosophy at Ohio State University before attending Yale Law School. He worked at a corporate law firm and as a principal at billionaire Peter Thiel’s investment firm in San Francisco.
Republicans officially nominated Trump and Vance at the start of their four-day national convention in Milwaukee. Vance was accompanied by his wife, Usha Vance, as he walked onto the convention floor. Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to Vance to congratulate him and expressed her hope for a future debate.
