Former US President Donald Trump, who is running for the 2024 Presidential elections, has denied any responsibility for the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. Trump claimed he offered ‘10,000 soldiers or National Guard’ for security but was turned down.

During a debate hosted by CNN, Trump avoided questions about his actions on January 6, 2021, and instead criticized President Joe Biden. Trump highlighted various achievements of his administration, such as border security and low taxes, but did not address the Capitol riot directly.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol to protest the certification of the 2020 election results, which Trump claimed were fraudulent. Over 725 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in the riot.

President Joe Biden accused Trump of inciting the violence and failing to act to stop it. Biden mentioned that Trump spent three hours watching the riot unfold, despite being urged by his vice president and other Republicans to intervene.

Trump also claimed that Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House at the time, refused his offer of National Guard troops. Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, refuted this, stating that Pelosi was not responsible for Capitol security and accusing Trump of trying to rewrite history.

Biden launched his re-election campaign in April 2023, framing the election as a choice between democracy and its potential destruction under Trump. Trump announced his candidacy in November 2022. Biden, the oldest president in US history, would be 86 at the end of a second term, while Trump would break Biden’s record if he wins.
