Doctors Strike Nationwide After Tragic Incident at RG Kar Medical College

The OPD services at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata remain closed as junior doctors strike over the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) continues its nationwide shutdown of OPD services.

On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The family alleges that she was raped and murdered. This incident has sparked widespread outrage and protests within the medical community.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, arriving in Kolkata with a specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi. The Calcutta High Court ordered this investigation.

FAIMA announced on social media that they had a meeting with Resident Doctors’ Associations across India and decided to continue the strike, demanding central protection for healthcare workers. The resident doctors at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) also decided to continue their strike until their demands are met in writing.

Protests have spread to other medical institutions, including Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College Hospital (ANMMC) in South Bihar, where doctors held a protest and sat on strike demanding justice.
