Doctors Protest Over RG Kar Medical College Incident in Kolkata

In Kolkata, West Bengal, doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continued their protest on Tuesday over the tragic rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor. The Supreme Court has reminded that no action should be taken against doctors if they return to work by September 10. However, if they fail to do so, the state government may take disciplinary action.

Doctors’ Demands

Doctor Aniket Mandal, President of the Resident Doctors’ Association at RG Kar Medical College, stated that doctors will not resume work until their demands are met. These demands include the arrest of all culprits, the formation of a disciplinary action committee by the health ministry, and the suspension of Sandip Ghosh.

Dr. Soumyadip Roy, a junior doctor, reiterated these demands, emphasizing the need for positive feedback from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the motive behind the incident, disciplinary action against Sandip Ghosh, the resignation of Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal, and assurances about the safety and security of doctors and health staff in West Bengal and across India.

Public and Political Reactions

Common citizens and doctors have been protesting the brutal incident, which occurred on August 9th when the victim was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. The Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) has called for doctors to return to work, highlighting the increasing human cost of their absence. TMC mentioned a recent case where a man from Haripal, Hooghly, lost his life after being denied necessary treatment.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also urged doctors to return to work during an administrative review meeting. She stated that the Supreme Court has requested doctors to resume work immediately and that they are welcome to meet her if they wish.

Supreme Court’s Involvement

On September 9, the Supreme Court directed the CBI to file a fresh status report by next week regarding the murder and rape case.
