Doctors Protest Nationwide Over Kolkata Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death

Junior doctors and medical students at AIIMS Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district staged a protest on Friday. This was in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The medical students also performed a street play as part of their protest.

Demands for Justice

Senior Resident Doctor at AIIMS Mangalagiri, Dr. Sreeja, requested the CBI to conduct a transparent investigation. She stated, “On the eve of Independence Day, protesting doctors at RG Kar faced mob attacks and also police attacks. The hospital was vandalised and evidence was erased. In condemnation of this, we are protesting here. It’s not just a crime against doctors. It’s a crime against women and humanity. We request the CBI to conduct a transparent investigation. The victim’s family should receive adequate compensation. We also demand a Central Protection Act for all healthcare workers.”

Nationwide Protests

Doctors and medical students of AIIMS Delhi also demanded a Central Protection Act for healthcare workers. AIIMS Delhi doctor Kumar Kartikay said they will not step back until they get an assurance that action will be taken. Medical professionals at Chandigarh PGIMER continued their demonstration on Friday, stating that the protest will continue until justice is delivered.

Service Suspension in Amritsar

The Resident Doctors Association at Government Medical College in Amritsar, Punjab, announced the suspension of all non-essential and elective hospital services, including Out Patient Departments, operating theatres, and wards, starting on August 16 and continuing until further notice.

Case Investigation

A post-graduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and killed in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The CBI has taken over the case and an investigation is underway. The opposition BJP has accused the ruling TMC of a “cover-up” in the matter.
