Doctors Protest in Delhi for Justice for Female Doctor Found Dead in West Bengal
Doctors at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi held a protest on Saturday to support a female post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor who was found dead inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The doctors carried posters and chanted slogans, demanding a CBI inquiry.
Dr. Gautam, one of the protesting doctors, emphasized the need for safety and justice, stating, “Women are not safe even inside the campus where we talk about women’s empowerment across the country. To ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future, the government should think about it. Whoever is guilty should be caught quickly.” He also mentioned that the provisional postmortem report indicated sexual assault and murder.
Another female protestor expressed frustration over the lack of action, saying, “As a female doctor, my only question is who will be next?”
Dr. Ritik Ghosh highlighted that such incidents have happened multiple times in West Bengal and criticized the assurances given by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said, “This is not the first incident in West Bengal and all over India. These kinds of assurances have been given to us a lot of times by the Bengal CM also. We are not satisfied with any of them. In the last 3-4 years, heinous crimes have been committed against doctors for which there has been no punishment adequately dealt out for culprits. It is a matter of shame for the Bengal government and the entire India.”
Congress workers also held a rally demanding justice in Kolkata on Saturday. On Friday evening, a group of students organized a candlelight march in the city following the discovery of the postgraduate trainee doctor’s body.
The death of the second-year medical student has sparked a political storm in West Bengal. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, have both demanded a CBI investigation. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar and West Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul visited the residence of the deceased doctor, criticizing the TMC government over the law and order situation in West Bengal. Majumdar compared the incident to the Nirbhaya case in Delhi, calling it “shameful and horrific.”
