Doctors Protest Across Madhya Pradesh After Tragic Incident in Kolkata

Groups of doctors in Madhya Pradesh held protests and strikes on Tuesday against the sexual assault and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The tragic incident occurred on August 9, leading to widespread outrage.

AIIMS Bhopal Strike

The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) at AIIMS Bhopal announced an indefinite suspension of elective services, including OPDs, elective OTs, ward duties, and lab services. Emergency services, however, will continue as usual.

In a letter, RDA AIIMS Bhopal stated, “In light of this tragedy and in solidarity with our colleagues, we support the nationwide indefinite suspension of elective services starting Tuesday, August 13.”

Indore Protests

Junior doctors protested outside Government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital in Indore. Dr. Nayan Jain, President of the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) Indore, said, “The incident in West Bengal is very painful and condemnable. Our demand is that the Doctor Protection Act should be strengthened and implemented.”

Junior doctor Pragati Gautam added, “In MY Hospital, male and female doctors are being assaulted. There are no security guards during our night duty. We have also submitted a memorandum to MGM Dean and Superintendent of MY Hospital.”

Gwalior Protests

Doctors at Jaya Arogya Hospital in Gwalior expressed their protest by wearing black bands. They stated, “Today we are working wearing black bands. There is a strike going on in several institutions in the country.”

Candlelight Marches

Earlier, doctors took candlelight marches in Gwalior and Indore to protest the incident. On August 10, doctors at AIIMS Bhopal also held a candlelight march.
