Doctors in Kolkata Urged to End Strike After Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death
The West Bengal Medical Council has requested all doctors to end their strike and return to work, considering the health of the common people. This comes after the tragic death of a female post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
In a letter signed by Sudipto Roy, President of the Council, it was stated, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the recent sudden death of a young female doctor at the R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The West Bengal Medical Council strongly condemns this incident and demands justice against this heinous incident through immediate arrest and speedy trial of the guilty person.”
The Council expressed satisfaction with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s swift intervention, acceptance of the doctors’ demands, and direction for swift action against the guilty. The Council believes that the family of the deceased doctor will receive speedy justice.
The Council also mentioned that the indefinite strike by a section of the medical community is disrupting medical services for poor people relying on government hospitals. They urged all doctors to call off the strike and return to work to restore normalcy in the health sector.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. An investigation confirmed rape and murder, with signs of a struggle on the victim’s body. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation to the CBI.
