Doctors in Delhi Protest for Safety After Kolkata Incident

New Delhi [India], August 17: Representatives from the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors’ Associations of Governmental Medical Colleges & Hospitals of Delhi met with the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. This meeting followed the tragic incident involving a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The associations expressed their concerns about the safety and security of healthcare workers. The Ministry assured them of all possible efforts to ensure the security of healthcare professionals. It was noted that 26 states have already passed legislation for the protection of healthcare workers. The Ministry promised to form a committee to suggest measures for ensuring safety, inviting suggestions from all stakeholders, including state governments.

The Ministry also requested the protesting doctors to resume their duties due to the rising cases of Dengue and Malaria. Meanwhile, IMA National President Dr. Asokan called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the incident, stating that they would write to him. Dr. Asokan emphasized the need for the right to life and safety for all healthcare workers.

Doctors across the country are protesting against the incident, with overwhelming support from all sectors. The IMA announced a nationwide strike, and doctors at AIIMS Delhi staged a protest march, demanding justice and the implementation of a Central Protection Act (CPA). IMA Secretary General Dr. Anil Kumar J Nayak expressed hope that the government would bring the demanded law.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, leading to nationwide protests. The incident has drawn significant attention to the safety of women and healthcare workers.
