Doctors in Delhi Protest for Safety After Tragic Incident in Kolkata
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi are protesting to show their commitment to patient care following the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
AIIMS Director’s Appeal
AIIMS Director Prof M Srinivas has requested the resident doctors to resume their duties immediately to ensure that patient care services are normalized. He emphasized that while the safety of healthcare professionals is crucial, the primary duty of doctors is to attend to patients.
Government and Supreme Court Actions
The Government of India and the Supreme Court have assured actions to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals. The Supreme Court has formed a 10-member National Task Force, including Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, to recommend measures for preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. The task force is expected to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months.
Resident Doctors’ Association’s Response
The Resident Doctors’ Association of AIIMS, New Delhi, announced that they would provide OPD services from Jantar Mantar to demonstrate their commitment to patient care. This move is to show solidarity with the residents of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Investigation and Reports
The Supreme Court has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report on the investigation into the rape case. Additionally, the West Bengal government has been asked to report on the mob attack incident at RG Kar hospital on August 15.
