Doctors Continue Strike After Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death at RG Kar Medical College
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has decided to continue their strike in response to the tragic rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Meeting with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
A meeting held today between doctors and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare ended without reaching an agreement. FAIMA announced on social media that they are awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision for further direction.
Supreme Court Involvement
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the case. A bench including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the case on August 20.
Incident Details
The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day. The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation, expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s handling of the case.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of destroying crucial evidence related to the case. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia called for Mamata’s resignation, labeling her as a ‘destroyer.’
