Doctors at Sassoon Hospital in Pune Abandon Patient at Night, Activists Reveal

In Pune, Maharashtra, a shocking incident has come to light where doctors at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital are accused of abandoning destitute patients at night. This disturbing practice was exposed by activists Ritesh Gaikwad and Dadasaheb Gaikwad.

The Incident

In a recent case, a doctor and his colleague allegedly abandoned a 32-year-old patient named Nilesh, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, on a road several kilometers away from the hospital. Nilesh had been admitted for treatment after a bus accident on June 16, which resulted in the loss of both his legs. He was left to fend for himself on Monday midnight.

Police Action

Following a complaint by social workers, the Pune police have registered a case against the doctor under section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with acts endangering life or personal safety of others.

Hospital’s Response

Sassoon Hospital’s dean, Dr. Eknath Pawar, stated that an inquiry has been initiated into the incident, and the doctors involved have been suspended. He mentioned that Nilesh was undergoing treatment in the orthopaedic department and had surgery on June 27. Two days ago, he was informed that the patient had gone missing from the hospital.

Call for Action

This incident is part of a series of mismanagement and malpractice cases at Sassoon Hospital, raising concerns about patient care and safety. Activists Ritesh Gaikwad and Dadasaheb Gaikwad are demanding action against the erring doctor and improvements in hospital management.
