Doctors at AIIMS Delhi Protest Over RG Kar Medical College Incident

Doctors at All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi staged a protest march on Saturday following the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) announcement of a nationwide strike. The strike was in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The doctors held posters and chanted slogans demanding justice. IMA Secretary General Dr. Anil Kumar J Nayak expressed hope that the government would enact the Central Protection Act (CPA) for doctors’ safety. He mentioned that 4000-5000 doctors participated in a rally and that they have been in talks with Union Minister JP Nadda and other authorities.

In Jaipur, junior doctors and students of SMS Medical College and Hospital also protested against the incident. Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, arrived at the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) office in Kolkata and denied rumors of his arrest.

The IMA has declared a 24-hour withdrawal of services by all modern medicine doctors across the country, except for emergencies and casualties, from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The incident has led to massive protests and calls for better protection for medical professionals.
