Doctors Across India Protest After Tragic Incident at RG Kar Medical College

New Delhi, India – August 12, 2024: The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has announced a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals starting Monday, August 12, 2024. This decision comes in response to the tragic rape and murder of a second-year resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

FORDA expressed deep condemnation of the horrific event in a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, describing it as a significant travesty in the history of the resident doctor community. The association emphasized that the tragedy is an attack on both their profession and humanity itself.

FORDA’s demands include the resignation of responsible authorities such as the Principal, MSVP, Dean, and the Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at RG Kar Medical College. They also call for action against the Assistant Commissioner of Police of the RG Kar MC&H police outpost for failing to protect the dignity and life of the on-duty doctor.

Additionally, FORDA insists on assurances against police brutality and manhandling of protesting doctors, the right to peaceful protest, justice for the deceased doctor, and appropriate compensation for her family.

FORDA stands ready to assist in achieving these goals and urges the government to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all healthcare professionals.
