DMK Protests Against Union Budget 2024 for Neglecting Tamil Nadu
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) held protests across Tamil Nadu, accusing the central government of neglecting the state in the Union Budget 2024. The protests took place ahead of the 9th NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.
Chief Minister MK Stalin’s Criticism
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, calling the budget a ‘vengeful act’ against states and people who boycotted the BJP. He stated, ‘I was supposed to attend the NITI Aayog meeting in Delhi, but I am compelled to speak before you, seeking justice due to the discriminatory attitude towards Tamil Nadu reflected in Union Budget 2024.’
Stalin highlighted the progressive schemes of the Dravidian Model Government in Tamil Nadu, which have been implemented over the past three years, benefiting every family and citizen. He accused the Union Government of actions contrary to these progressive thoughts.
Union Budget Announcements
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced major infrastructure boosts for Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in the Union Budget 2024-25. However, Tamil Nadu was notably disregarded, according to Stalin.

Stalin was the first to announce his boycott of the NITI Aayog meeting. Following his lead, Congress chief ministers from Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana also decided to skip the meeting.
