DMK Leader TKS Elangovan Talks About Tamil Nadu’s Water Crisis and Cauvery Dispute
DMK leader TKS Elangovan spoke about the water crisis in Tamil Nadu, highlighting that the Cauvery water dispute is an issue between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. He emphasized the need to ensure that no low-lying area is devoid of water.
The crisis intensified after Karnataka decided to release only 8,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu, instead of the 11,500 cusecs directed by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). Elangovan mentioned that an all-party meeting would determine the next steps in addressing the dispute.
BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai criticized the DMK-led state government for not taking effective measures to mitigate the water crisis. He warned that Tamil Nadu could face extreme water scarcity by 2050 if no action is taken.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, after an all-party meeting, stated that they decided to release 8,000 cusecs of water and would increase the amount if it rains. The meeting included Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, BJP leaders, and Mysuru basin leaders.
Earlier this year, Bengaluru faced a severe water crisis, with many villages and wards in Karnataka at risk of a drinking water shortage. The governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have long been in conflict over the sharing of Cauvery waters, a crucial resource for both states.
