In Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a controversy has erupted over a ‘Spiritual Awakening’ session held at a government school. DMK leader and Tiruchirappalli MP, Durai Vaiko, has strongly criticized the event and promised action against those responsible.

Vaiko’s Condemnation

Durai Vaiko expressed his disapproval, stating, ‘It is highly condemnable that we had a person in the name of Mahavishnu get into a school campus; in fact, he was invited by school authorities to give a motivational lecture.’ He described the speaker as irrational and unsuitable for educational institutions.

Vaiko added, ‘He says if we chant the mantra, we may get acid rain, and sick people may get cured. This sort of person should never be allowed inside an educational institution. This person claims to be an avatar of God.’

Government Response

Both the Chief Minister and the Education Minister have condemned the event. The principal of Ashok Nagar Girls Higher Secondary School, R. Thamilarasi, was transferred following the controversy. A committee has been formed to investigate the permissions granted for the event, and action will be taken based on the findings.

Governor’s Remarks

Regarding Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s comments on the CBSE syllabus being superior to the state syllabus, Vaiko accused Ravi of acting as an RSS ‘Pracharak’ and defended the state syllabus as being on par with the CBSE syllabus.

Chief Minister’s Statement

Chief Minister MK Stalin emphasized the importance of scientific thinking in education. He stated that the state’s textbooks contain the best scientific ideas and that new guidelines will be issued to ensure students receive progressive and scientific education.
