Diwali Celebrations Leave Thoothukudi with Over a Thousand Tons of Garbage
Thoothukudi, a city in Tamil Nadu, India, is dealing with a massive cleanup after Diwali celebrations. Officials have reported that more than one thousand tons of garbage have accumulated across the city, particularly in all 60 wards of the Thoothukudi Corporation.
Sanitation workers have been working hard since the morning to clear the mess. However, the cleanup has been delayed in some areas because some workers were on vacation. A Corporation Officer assured that all workers would return to work soon, and garbage removal would continue as usual.
Thoothukudi was upgraded to a Municipal Corporation on August 5, 2008, and expanded to cover 90,663 square kilometers. The city, which had a population of 320,466 according to the 2001 census, was divided into 60 wards after its expansion in 2011. These wards are organized into four mandals: East, West, North, and South.
