Dimple Yadav Takes Oath as MP from Mainpuri in 18th Lok Sabha

Dimple Yadav, a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), was sworn in as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Mainpuri on the second day of the 18th Lok Sabha. She won the seat by a margin of 2,21,639 votes, defeating BJP’s Jaiveer Singh. The Mainpuri seat has been held by the Samajwadi Party since 1996, with a series of electoral victories.

Dimple Yadav is the wife of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and the daughter-in-law of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. On the same day, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also took their oaths.

The first day of the 18th Lok Sabha saw 262 newly-elected MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, taking their oaths. The election for the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha is scheduled for Wednesday, with BJP’s Om Birla and INDIA bloc’s K Suresh as candidates.

During the Parliament session, the INDIA Alliance, led by the Congress, protested against the Modi-led NDA government. A war of words occurred between PM Modi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over the 1975 emergency. Rahul Gandhi, who won from both Raebareli and Wayanad, announced he would resign from Wayanad, and Priyanka Gandhi was announced as the candidate for Wayanad.

This will be the first time elections are held for the Speaker of the lower house, as traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker have been elected by consensus between the ruling party and the opposition.
