On November 17, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met with a delegation from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in New Delhi. The meeting focused on the possibility of establishing an offshore campus of JHU in India. The 12-member delegation was led by JHU’s president, Ronald J Daniels, and included officials from the Gupta Klinsky India Institute (GKII), which aims to connect JHU with Indian partners through research and education.

Strengthening Academic Collaborations

The discussions centered on enhancing academic and research collaborations between JHU, a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland, and top Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Pradhan highlighted the opportunities provided by the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students in both countries.

Key Participants and Discussions

Higher education Secretary K Sanjay Murthy and senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of External Affairs attended the meeting. Pradhan appreciated JHU’s commitment to building strong partnerships with Indian HEIs, particularly in dual and joint degree programs, student and faculty exchanges, and research in emerging fields like data science and artificial intelligence.

The delegation’s visit underscores the growing importance of India-US educational cooperation. As part of their tour, they will visit various Indian universities and engage with government officials and academic leaders. The delegation included notable academicians such as Fritz W. Schroeder, Alexander Triantis, Judd Walson, Sridevi Sarma, Jon Goldstein, and Amita Gupta, along with Indian-origin faculty like Mathuram Santosham and Chirag Parikh.
