Dharavi’s Million Diyas Light Up Diwali
A Celebration of Tradition and Community
In Mumbai, the Dharavi Social Mission, part of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), has facilitated the sale of nearly one million handcrafted diyas from Dharavi’s Kumbharwada for Diwali. These diyas will be used by Mumbai International Airport and the Adani Foundation for festive programs.
About 500 artisans and their families, who have been crafting these traditional lamps for generations, have benefited from this initiative. Hanif Galwani, a member of the Kumbharwada Potters’ Association, expressed the significance of this order, stating, “This is the largest order we have ever received. The support from DRPPL has empowered us to keep our traditions alive.”
The initiative aims to preserve traditional craftsmanship and support local businesses in Dharavi. A spokesperson from DRPPL highlighted Dharavi’s resilience and entrepreneurship, emphasizing the potential for growth and innovation within the community.
The Dharavi Social Mission focuses on the development of Dharavi residents, with special attention to youth, women, industries, and underprivileged groups.
