Democrats Urge President Joe Biden to Step Down from 2024 Race
Several Democrats from the US Congress have urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential race. According to a report, most of these lawmakers are rank-and-file members, even though the Democratic Party leadership continues to support Biden’s re-election.
Key Figures and Their Concerns
Top national security Democrats like Jim Hines and Adam Smith, who are ranking members on the Intelligence and Armed Services Committees, respectively, are among those calling for Biden to step aside. Lloyd Doggett, a Texas lawmaker with nearly three decades in Congress, was the first to suggest Biden should make the ‘painful decision’ to step aside for a stronger candidate.
Seth Moulton from Massachusetts expressed concerns that Biden’s candidacy could lead the party to lose. Younger lawmakers like Eric Sorensen, Pat Ryan, Hillary Scholten, and Mike Levin, who come from districts where Democrats do not have a stronghold, also share these concerns.
Meeting with Biden’s Advisers
A meeting was held on Thursday between Democrat senators and top Biden advisers. Although the meeting did not reassure the lawmakers, no official calls for Biden to back off have been made since then.
Support for Biden
Despite the concerns, several other Democrats have voiced their support for Biden in the November elections. The divided opinions among lawmakers highlight an ideological split that could benefit Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate.
