Delhi’s Munak Canal Breach Causes Floods in Bawana

On Thursday, a sub-branch of the Munak Canal in the Bawana region of North Delhi sustained a breach, leading to flooding in nearby areas. The Munak Canal is part of the Western Yamuna Canal, and its Career Lined Channel (CLC) that runs into Bawana broke.

Immediate Response

Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi announced that the Delhi Jal Board is working closely with the Haryana Irrigation Department to manage the situation. Water has been diverted to another sub-branch, and repair work is expected to be completed by the afternoon. The breached sub-branch will be functional by tomorrow.

On-Site Inspection

Flood Control Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj inspected the site and coordinated efforts with the Delhi Jal Board. He instructed the Chief Engineer of the Flood Department to assist in the repair work.

Local Impact

Alam, a resident of JJ Colony, reported that water had entered every block of the colony and criticized the administration for not doing enough to control the flow. He mentioned that the barrage of the Munak Canal broke around midnight.

Future Preparedness

Bharadwaj assured that the Flood Department is better prepared this year, with new machinery and a 5-meter wide embankment of rocks in place to prevent future flooding from the Yamuna River.
