Delhi’s Air Quality Concerns: Gopal Rai Urges Artificial Rain Measures

Delhi’s Air Quality Concerns

Current Air Quality Status

On Sunday, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 224, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP reviewed the air quality and meteorological forecasts from IMD/IITM. The AQI showed a rise due to episodic events but improved to 222 by 5 PM, with further improvement expected.

Government Actions and Proposals

The Sub-Committee decided to monitor the situation before implementing Stage I of GRAP. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai wrote to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, suggesting artificial rain to combat pollution, especially with Diwali approaching. Rai noted a delay in cloud seeding efforts and emphasized the need for prior clearances from government agencies. The Delhi government began an anti-dust campaign on October 7.

Doubts Revealed

Air Quality Index (AQI) -: The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a number used to communicate how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. It helps people understand the quality of the air and its potential health effects.
