Delhi’s Air Pollution: A Heated Debate
In New Delhi, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for their inaction on air pollution. He accused the BJP governments in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and at the center of being inactive while Delhi’s air quality worsens. Rai mentioned that the wind speed is decreasing and temperatures are dropping, leading to poor air quality. He announced a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to address pollution hotspots.
Rai highlighted efforts by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to combat pollution, such as increasing green areas, providing 24-hour electricity, and running electric buses. He accused the BJP of not taking similar actions.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla protested at a ‘Smog Tower’ in Delhi, accusing AAP of failing to deliver on promises to reduce pollution. He claimed that Delhi has become a ‘gas chamber’ due to AAP’s politics and criticized the closure of a smog tower that cost Rs 23 crore.
Poonawalla argued that AAP’s actions have put the health of Delhi’s citizens at risk, especially the elderly and children.
