Delhi Tragedy: MCD Seals Properties After Flooding at Rau’s IAS Coaching Institute

In a tragic incident, three UPSC aspirants lost their lives due to flooding at Rau’s IAS coaching institute in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar. In response, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has sealed seven properties and three basements in the Karol Bagh Zone for violating building bye-laws.

The MCD is thoroughly investigating the cause of the flooding. Despite the property owner having the required documents, the basement was used improperly as a library and reading hall, violating fire clearance conditions.

Tariq Thomas, Additional Commissioner MCD, stated, “We have identified 8 coaching centres that are in the basement and among them, we have sealed three of them. Compensation will be provided by the government. Action will be taken in the incident. A survey is being done…A magisterial inquiry has been ordered by the government.”

In light of the incident, a plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court by the NGO Hindu Rashtriya Pravasi Manch. The plea seeks directives for the MCD to implement measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure safety compliance. It also calls for an independent inquiry and adequate compensation for the victims’ families.
