Delhi Police Investigate Online Comments Against Widow of Heroic Soldier Captain Anshuman Singh

Delhi police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a Delhi resident for making offensive comments online about the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. The police acted on a letter from the National Commission for Women (NCW) to the Delhi Commissioner of Police, demanding the man’s arrest and a detailed report within three days.

The complaint from the NCW stated that a social media user made extremely lewd and derogatory comments on a picture of the widow of the late soldier. The comments violate Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The NCW condemned the behavior and urged immediate police action.

After a preliminary examination of the complaint, a case FIR under sections 79, BNS-2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act 2000 was registered at the Police Station Special Cell, and an investigation has begun.

Captain Anshuman Singh, a doctor with the 26 Punjab, was posted in the Siachen Glacier area. On the night of July 19, 2023, a fire broke out at an Indian Army ammunition dump at his camp. Captain Singh heroically rescued several individuals trapped inside a burning hut and attempted to retrieve a critical medical aid box from a burning room but could not escape due to heavy fire and strong winds. He was awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously, and his wife Smriti and mother received the award from President Droupadi Murmu.
