Delhi Police Detain Coaching Centre Owner After Tragic Incident
On Sunday, Delhi Police detained the owner and coordinator of an IAS coaching centre in Old Rajender Nagar, where three students tragically lost their lives due to waterlogging in the basement. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, M Harshavardhan, stated that a case has been registered against the coaching institute, the building management, and those responsible for maintaining the drain at the location.
Victims Identified
The victims were identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh; Tanya Soni from Telangana; and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam, Kerala. Their bodies have been sent to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for an autopsy.
Investigation and Protests
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma assured protesting students that a thorough investigation would be conducted. The students were demonstrating against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the coaching institute’s management, demanding accountability for the deaths.
Allegations of Corruption
Former Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal alleged corruption in the operation of illegal basements in the city. She questioned how illegal basements and extra floors could operate without bribes and criticized the authorities for not taking action despite repeated complaints from students.
