New Delhi [India], September 22: A man named Rohit has been arrested for allegedly smuggling 65 kg of illegal fireworks into New Delhi ahead of Diwali. The arrest took place during a night patrol by the Delhi Police in the Nihal Vihar area.

Details of the Incident

On the night of September 20-21, a police team on night patrol duty noticed a suspicious black car heading towards Sunday Bazar near Chander Vihar, Nihal Vihar. Upon searching the car, officers found four plastic bags filled with firecrackers. Rohit, the driver, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, and two other individuals, Vinit and Babloo, managed to escape.

Legal Actions

A case was registered under sections 288/125/3(5) BNS and 9(B) of the Explosives Act, 1984, at Nihal Vihar Police Station. Rohit was arrested, and the black car used for transporting the illegal firecrackers was seized. The investigation is ongoing.

Government Ban on Firecrackers

The Delhi government has imposed a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers to address air pollution during the winter. These restrictions will remain in effect until January 1, 2025. Online sales and delivery of firecrackers are also prohibited.

Monitoring Air Quality

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced that the Environment Department will use drones for real-time air quality monitoring at pollution hotspots as part of a 21-point Winter Action Plan to curb air pollution during the winter months.
