Delhi Minister Atishi Promises New Laws After Tragic Deaths of UPSC Aspirants

Delhi Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi Marlena, along with Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, met with students protesting the deaths of three UPSC aspirants due to flooding in a coaching institute’s basement on July 27 in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi.

Atishi stated, “We met a lot of UPSC aspirants at the Delhi Secretariat today. They called us here and asked us to meet the students. We have come here to talk about the demands of the students.”

Later, Atishi took to social media to promise that the Delhi government will take strict actions against responsible officers, introduce a Coaching Institute Regulation Act, and curb expensive coaching fees. She outlined several promises:

  • Strict action against responsible officers after the investigation.
  • Introduction of a Coaching Institute Regulation Act.
  • Involvement of 10 student representatives in the law drafting process.
  • Measures to curb expensive coaching fees and address issues like rent, brokerage, facilities, and safety.
  • Setting up a Grievance Redressal Office in the local MLA’s office until the law is made.
  • Building government libraries/reading rooms in major coaching hubs using the Mayor’s fund.

Earlier, Atishi met with a student delegation from major coaching centers in Delhi, including Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, and Nehru Vihar. Senior officials from the Delhi government, including the education department, MCD officers, law department, and fire department, attended the meeting. They listened to the students’ concerns and took feedback on the proposed regulations.

Atishi mentioned that students raised issues about infrastructure, fees, and the lack of study spaces after libraries in coaching institute basements were sealed. She assured that solutions would be found for both short-term and long-term problems.

BJP leader Jaya Prada also met with the students at the protest site.
